Data Discovery This is the final blog of a 4 part series on how data management is impacting the role of the CMO and marketing. Check out part one, part two, and part three in the series if you haven't already.

Data-influenced marketing, Self Service and data awareness are three trends that have helped to create a fourth trend, which is the realization that customer interaction, once initiated by marketers, now is in the control of the consumer. Technology and data availability through smart phones, smart televisions, digital and social media have turned control of the customer interaction completely on its head. As marketing professionals, we have to realize that and cater our marketing campaigns to these sources of information or risk irrelevance.

Data Discovery This is part 3 of a 4 part series of blogs on trends that focus on how data management is impacting the role of the CMO and marketing. Check out part one and part two in the series if you haven't already.

The amount of data we have is growing exponentially every day. News alert – that is not a trend! But, a marketer's reliance on many external sources of data, as well as new rules and regulations, is also continuing to increase, and that is creating heartburn and panic in many senior marketing professionals.

by Len Dubois, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Trillium Software

Data Discovery This is part 2 of a 4 part series of blogs on trends that focus on how data management is impacting the role of the CMO and marketing. Check out part one in the series here.

Engagement via social media channels can provide startling and often immediate feedback from our most well considered customer interactions. We need look no further than the 2015 Super Bowl and Nationwide Insurance's ad campaign for a very real example. Are you in Compliance with Canadian Anti-Spam Law?

by Len Dubois, Sr. Vice President, Marketing & Sales Support, Trillium Software

Canadian-antispamHey marketing people - I hope you're on top of your efforts to comply with Canada's Anti-Spam Law or CASL. Passed in December 2010 (and the deadline for compliance is July 1, 2014... oh my!), the Canadian law prohibits the sending of commercial electronic messages to Canadian contacts without the recipient's implied vs express consent. So, organizations could incur hefty penalties if Canadians report receiving unsolicited marketing messages.

The law's goal is to help protect Canadians from spamming practices while ensuring that businesses can continue to compete in a global marketplace. It is the toughest anti-span law in the world at this point. But, obviously, this is a huge dilemma for marketing organizations that market and sell to Canadian territories or have Canadian prospects.

Your Data Quality Wish List Part Two

by Len Dubois, Sr. Vice President, Marketing & Sales Support, Trillium Software

WishboneFor the second installment of our data quality “Wish List” series let's tackle another common concern from data professionals, “I wish I knew how poor data quality was manifesting itself in my business.”

You and I both know that without a data quality and data governance process in place, business processes can easily become mired in inefficiency. From a marketing perspective, the inability to accurately identify an inquiry resulting from a campaign as one originating from either an existing customer or prospect may set off a chain of communications that will indicate your organization has no clear idea who their customers are. There is not a week that goes by that I don’t get some type of marketing outreach from an organization, one in which I am a current customer, asking me to sign up for their internet/cable/tv package, or a bank that asks me to apply for a credit card that I already possess, or my own home mortgage provider asking me if I would like to change my rate to one that is higher than the one I currently have.

Your Data Quality Wish List Answered

by Len Dubois, Sr. Vice President, Marketing & Sales Support, Trillium Software

WishlistDuring my career here at Harte Hanks Trillium Software I’ve spoken to thousands of clients. Many, if not all, have in the back of their mind a vision for what they are looking for in a data quality solution and often they discuss this vision in terms of a set of “wishes.” This being the beginning of the season for granting wishes, I thought I’d write about some of the more common requests that I’ve heard and attempt to begin to provide a roadmap for improving the value of information in order to deliver the assurance that your data meets the needs of your organization.

Self Service Data

by Len Dubois, Sr. Vice President, Marketing & Sales Support, Trillium Software

Self-service2In my last post, we discussed the issue of hidden data and its impact on a company’s ability to make business decisions. Social media, free text fields and scanned documents all contain valuable information that is relevant to your business, but getting access to that data – which is contained outside of databases or buried across enterprise systems – is often the bigger issue.

What You Don’t Know Will Hurt You

by Len Dubois, Sr. Vice President, Marketing & Sales Support, Trillium Software

Risks-aheadImagine you are a football coach and you need to create a scouting report for your next opponent. What if you can only see video footage, statics and previous reports from two out of the ten games on their schedule and only ten of their 53 players?  How can you possibly develop a game plan to help your team win? Seems like a ridiculous scenario, but the truth is business leaders operate just like this each and every day.
